Behind the Panel

What Decides Tesla Dent Repair Cost in San Diego.

What you can't see sets the price.

The most common dents land on these side panels. Tap where yours is and the paint gives way to the real bracing behind that exact spot, so you can see what a technician is actually up against before the first push. Most technicians meet that structure when they arrive. We study it before we get there, on every Tesla paintless dent repair we take across San Diego.

Tap the car where your dent is
Tesla side profile, the painted finish you see from the outside Tesla with the panels made transparent, showing the internal bracing that decides paintless dent repair access

Tap the car where your dent is. Tap up to three spots.

For reference only. This is not an official or 100% accurate diagram. Every vehicle varies by make, model, year, and trim. The point is what it shows: the same size dent can be a different repair altogether.

Your dent may not be on a door, and that changes very little. Hoods, fenders, quarter panels and trunk lids all have structure behind them too: braces, reinforcement bars, brackets, wiring, and on a hood the whole underframe. Some spots on your car are wide open from behind and take minutes. Others sit directly over a brace and have to be reached a harder way, or reached after something comes off first. That is the single biggest reason two dents that look the same are not the same price.

This is why we never name a firm price without seeing what is behind your damaged panel. A dent over open metal is a clean paintless dent repair. The same dent over a brace, a beam, or a steel pillar is a different job. Anyone quoting one flat price for a Tesla dent sight unseen is guessing, and a guess is where surprise upsells come from. So you get an honest preliminary range from your photo up front, then the firm number once the panel is seen in person. Work behind a panel rewards patience, great care, and pride in doing it right, and that is what you are choosing when you choose your technician. See exactly what drives the price.

Your Tesla, Solved

Can You Fix a Dent on a Tesla in San Diego?

Yes. Tesla dent repair is one of the most common jobs we do, and paintless dent repair resets the panel to factory with no repaint and nothing on the Carfax.

On a Tesla the aluminum doors take most of the hits. On a Model 3 or Model Y the hood and doors are aluminum and the fenders and rear quarters are steel, and on a Model S or Model X the body is all aluminum. Aluminum has no memory and stops most mobile technicians cold, and that is exactly where we are strongest. A door ding from a charger stall, a crease down a door, a dent on the frunk or the hatch, we work it back from behind the panel so the factory finish is never touched. More on the metal at aluminum dent repair.

Some people search Tesla paintless dent repair, others Tesla paintless dent removal, door ding removal, or door dent removal. On a Tesla it is the same fix, the dent worked out from behind the panel with the factory finish untouched and nothing on the Carfax.

Reaching the Dent

Tesla Door Dent Repair Across the Body Line.

How the dent is reached decides the result.

The aluminum doors take most of the hits on a Tesla, and the hardest place is across the body line, where bracing behind the skin leaves very little room to work. Late-model Teslas also have dual pane laminated side glass, which does not tolerate a tool leaning on it. When access is that tight, the door panel and the glass come out so the dent can be reached properly.

Through the latch side

The latch is dropped so the tools come in through the side of the door, below the glass and behind the body line.

Door panel and glass out

When there is no safe path, the door panel and the dual pane glass are removed and reinstalled, so nothing presses on the glass and nothing gets drilled.

Big dents on the rear quarter

Larger Tesla dents usually land on the rear quarter panel, around and above the bumper. On a Model 3 or Y that panel is steel, on a Model S or X it is aluminum.

Your options before any work

You hear which route your dent needs, what each one costs and what result it gets before anything starts. The standard and the budget are your call.

Tesla · What Actually Goes Wrong

Tesla Dent Repair Done Wrong.

What a Tesla looks like when the wrong person touches it.

Aluminum has no memory. Steel wants to spring back and a technician uses that. Aluminum gives nothing back, so it takes more force and more accuracy at the same time, and heat to keep it moving. Work it like steel and it does not fail quietly.

01

Paint that failed before the metal did

Worked cold or worked fast, so the finish cracked or lifted while the panel was still moving. The dent came out and the car still needs paint, which was the one thing paintless repair was supposed to protect.

02

Metal that will not sit flat again

Too much force in one place. The low spot comes up and a wave stays behind it. You find that wave the first time the car parks under garage lighting or beside a painted stall line.

03

Holes and glue damage

Access taken the fast way. A drilled hole behind a plug is permanent, and glue pulling on a panel that was not ready lifts the clear. Neither shows up on the day. Both show up later.

04

A quote written for the wrong metal

A Tesla is mixed construction. The door skin is aluminum and the fender is steel. A shop that assumes the whole car is one or the other prices the wrong panel, and finds out halfway through.

Clear coat cracked across a hood after a paintless dent repair was pushed past the limit of the metal
This hood is not a Tesla. The mistake behind it is the one that ruins them. Every one of those cracks is a separate over-push. On steel there is spring in the panel, and spring forgives a heavy hand for a while. An aluminum hood or door skin has none, so the same technician reaches this point faster and without the warning steel gives them. Once the clear has opened up, the panel has left paintless territory for good, and the only honest answer left is paint. This is the failure Myke gets called to look at after somebody else has already been paid.

Myke has seen all four, and often several on the same car, because they come from one root cause. Somebody treated aluminum like steel. That is why the real question on a Tesla is never whether the dent can come out. It is who is allowed to touch the panel.

Before They Call Us

Tesla Dent Repair Second Opinions.

Most Tesla owners reach us third or fourth.

  1. The service centre does not handle cosmetic panel damage, so they refer you out.
  2. A collision shop quotes a replacement panel and paint, because they will not work aluminum.
  3. An approved shop can take it, in several weeks, and the car sits until then.
  4. Someone cheaper took it on first, and now there are two problems to fix instead of one.

All four happen, and they happen in that order more often than not. Send photos before you start down that road, not after.

Behind the Paint

Why Two Identical Tesla Dings Quote Differently.

A Tesla door is a thin outer skin over an impact beam, a window regulator and wiring. A ding on open metal comes out from behind in minutes. The same ding over the beam has to be reached around it, and on aluminum, which gives nothing back, that access matters even more. That is what moves the number, not the width of the dent. See what actually drives the price.

The same door, inside and out. What you can't see is exactly what sets the price.

Your dent may not be on a door, and that changes very little. Hoods, fenders, quarter panels and tailgates all have structure behind them too: braces, reinforcement bars, brackets, wiring, and on a hood the whole underframe. Some spots on your car are wide open from behind and take minutes. Others sit directly over a brace and have to be reached a harder way, or reached after something comes off first. That is the single biggest reason two dents that look the same are not the same price.

Real Numbers

How Much Is Tesla Dent Repair in San Diego?

A Tesla dent starts at $197 on a steel panel and $250 on aluminum. On a Model 3 or Y the hood and doors are aluminum, the fenders and quarter panels are steel. Medium dents and creases run higher with depth and access.

Tesla doors and hoods are aluminum (the whole body on a Model S or Model X), and aluminum has no memory, so it takes more force and more precision to reset than steel. That is the only reason a Tesla dent runs a little higher than the same dent on a steel car, not a markup for the badge. The final number always comes down to four things, the size of the dent, where it sits on the panel, what bracing is behind that spot, and whether the paint is intact. Most repairs are still finished the same day, with the factory finish kept and nothing on the Carfax.

What a price never shows is the second cost you are not paying. A body shop means three to five days without the car, a rental, and a permanent line on the vehicle history that follows it to resale. Most repairs here are an hour or two, often at your own address, and the factory paint is still the factory paint afterward. Most people weigh the invoice and never weigh the week.

Hail damage

Priced by the storm and the panel count, usually $1,500 to $8,000 or more. This is the one repair where insurance usually makes sense. We work every panel, keep the factory finish, and handle the claim with your insurer directly.

File & Repair

Price follows depth, location, access behind the panel, and material, never a flat menu. Text a photo and a real number comes back in minutes, and you approve it before any work. See exactly what drives the price, or start from the full paintless dent repair guide.

The Question People Actually Ask

Do Teslas Dent Easily?

More easily than a lot of owners expect, and there is a straightforward reason. Tesla door skins are thin aluminum, and aluminum has no memory. A cart or a car door that would leave a faint mark on a heavier steel panel can leave a clear dent on a Model 3 or Model Y.

The good news is the other half of that. If the paint held, the panel is a strong candidate for paintless repair, and paintless is by far the better outcome on a Tesla. There is no repaint, no filler, and nothing added to the vehicle history, which matters more on an EV than most cars because the resale market pays close attention to panel work.

What it does mean is that the technician matters more, not less. Aluminum gives nothing back. Every correction takes more force and more accuracy at once than the same dent in steel, and pushing too fast is how the clear coat cracks. That is the whole reason a Tesla door ding starts around $250 rather than $197.

What Aluminum Actually Takes

Aluminum Dent Repair, Explained.

Why aluminum is the hardest metal in this trade.

Aluminum is far more challenging than steel and it is not flexible. It does not have the same memory steel does, so it never wants to return to shape on its own. The repair uses heat and sharper tools to manipulate the flow of the aluminum back into place, and that takes more time and far more precision.

None of this is an electric car story. Ford has built the F-150 body in aluminum since 2015, and Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz use aluminum on hoods, doors, and tailgates across their ranges. If you drive something built in the last decade, there is a good chance at least one panel on it is aluminum.

The Thing Worth Worrying About

Most People Worry About the Repair. Worry About the Technician.

Almost every question we get about aluminum is some version of "is this repairable?" That is the wrong thing to be nervous about. On an intact-paint panel the answer is nearly always yes.

The real variable is who is doing it. Aluminum punishes inexperience in a way steel never does. Steel forgives a wrong move because it wants to go back. Aluminum records it. The same dent, on the same panel, on the same day, comes out invisible in one set of hands and pock-marked in another.

So the question worth asking a shop is not whether they can fix aluminum. Everyone says yes. Ask how long they have been doing it, and ask to see one they finished.

See what the wrong hands leave behind in real bad repairs, or send two photos and get an honest read on your panel.

Tesla Dent Repair, Answered

Tesla Dent Repair Questions.

The questions people actually ask.

Do you drill holes to fix a dent on a Tesla?
No, not as a default and never without telling you. A Tesla door dent across the body line is reached through the latch side or, when access is too tight, by removing the door panel and the dual pane glass and putting them back. You hear the route your dent needs and what it costs before any work starts.
Why does a Tesla door dent on the body line cost more?
Because three things stack up. The door is aluminum, which has no memory and takes more force and more precision. Bracing sits behind the body line, so there is very little room to work. And late-model Teslas have dual pane laminated glass that can need to come out when access is too tight. The extra time goes into reaching the dent properly, not into a markup for the badge.
Does the window have to come out to fix my Tesla door dent?
Sometimes. When the dent sits where the tools cannot safely get past the glass, the door panel and the dual pane glass are removed so nothing presses on the glass, then reinstalled. Many door dents can be reached through the latch side instead. Your photos tell us which one you have, and the estimate says so.
Can you fix a dent on a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y?
Yes. Model 3 and Model Y dents are our most common Tesla repair, from door dings to body-line creases. The aluminum panel is reset to factory with no repaint and nothing on the Carfax.
How much does it cost to fix a dent on a Tesla?
A Tesla dent starts at $197 on a steel panel and $250 on aluminum. On a Model 3 or Y the hood and doors are aluminum, which takes more force and precision to reset, and the fenders and quarter panels are steel. Medium dents and creases run higher. Text a photo to 858-408-6200 for a written estimate.
Does Tesla dent repair affect the battery?
No. Paintless dent repair works only on the body panel, never the battery, electronics or structure, and it adds no heat near the pack. Paid out of pocket, nothing lands on Carfax.
Do you repair the Cybertruck?
We assess Cybertruck panels in person. The stainless exterior behaves differently from a painted panel, so we look at the specific dent and tell you honestly what is and is not possible before any work.
Do you offer mobile Tesla dent repair near me?
Often yes. We bring mobile Tesla dent repair to your home or office across San Diego County. Repairs that need controlled lighting or heavy access route to our Escondido shop, and we tell you which path gives the best result before you book.
How much does Tesla door ding or small dent repair cost?
A Tesla door ding runs $250 to $350+ on an aluminum door, dime to quarter size with the paint intact. The same small dent on a steel fender or rear quarter starts at $197. On a Model 3 or Model Y the hood and doors are aluminum, which has no memory and takes more force and precision to reset. A ding across the door body line runs higher, because bracing behind the skin leaves very little room to work.
Why is a dent on a Tesla door body line harder to fix?
Because bracing sits right behind the body line on Model 3 and Model Y doors, and late-model Teslas use laminated side glass that cannot take tool pressure. Going straight down from the window opening is often blocked, so the door is worked by dropping the latch for side access, or by removing the door panel and the glass. Tap the door in the Behind the Panel view on this page and the bracing under that exact spot appears.
Is paintless dent repair safe near a Tesla charge port?
Yes, with the right preparation. The charge port and its high-voltage cabling sit behind the left rear quarter, so that corner is an electrical safety matter before it is a dent matter. Our technicians are EV Level 2 trained in electric vehicle safety, and when the location calls for it the vehicle is safely powered down before the work starts, Tesla or any other EV.
Are Tesla quarter panels aluminum?
Not all of them, and this is where a lot of quotes go wrong. A Tesla is mixed construction, not an all-aluminum car. On the models we see most, the door skins and hood are aluminum while the front fender is steel, and the structure behind them is high-strength steel and castings. A shop that assumes the whole vehicle is aluminum will quote you as if every panel is the hardest case. We identify the actual panel material on your car before quoting, because steel and aluminum are two different repairs at two different prices.
Can you do paintless dent repair on a Tesla?
Yes, and it is usually the right repair. As long as the factory paint is intact, the panel is worked from behind and reset to its original plane with no paint and no filler. That keeps the finish the car was built with and puts nothing on the Carfax. Tesla body shop appointments are known for long waits, and paintless repair avoids that queue entirely for damage that does not need paint.
How much does Tesla Model Y dent repair cost?
A Model Y door ding runs $250 to $350+, a medium dent $350 to $650+, and a crease or body-line dent $400 to $900+. Larger or complex damage runs higher. The Model Y is the Tesla we repair most, and the two most common spots are the rear door and the liftgate. Aluminum runs above the steel price because it takes more force and accuracy to reset, not because it is a Tesla.
How much does Tesla Model 3 dent repair cost?
A Model 3 door ding runs $250 to $350+ and a medium dent $350 to $650+, the same aluminum pricing as the Model Y. The Model 3 door skin is thin, so dings on it are common and usually shallow, which is favorable for paintless repair. Text a straight-on photo and one at 45 degrees for a written estimate.
Can you fix a dent in a Model Y liftgate or trunk?
Yes, and it is one of the more common Model Y repairs. The liftgate is a large horizontal-ish panel that collects cart hits, garage contact, and things set down on it. Access behind it means working around the trim and the latch structure, which is part of what sets the price. It runs $300 to $900+ depending on depth and where the dent sits relative to the bracing.
Is a Tesla dent repair worth doing before selling?
Yes, and the resale case is stronger on a Tesla than on most cars. EV buyers and appraisers look hard at panel work, and a repaint on an aluminum panel is both visible under the right light and permanent on the vehicle history. Paintless repair leaves neither. On a car where a single panel repaint can cost more than the dent repair several times over, it is not a close call.
