The most asked question I get from new pdr beginners is, “what kind of PDR tools should I buy?”
To be honest, none. Don’t purchase ANY PDR tool before you understand how to use them. That way you’ll be aware and educated enough to understand what they do, what panels they are ideal for and so on. I explain this pretty well in this PDR training video below.
3 TOP PDR TOOLS FOR BEGINNERS
INVEST IN YOURSELF AND YOUR TIME
I’m going to cut to the chase. You can watch all the free youtube videos out there (including mine) — and you’ll find some good ones. However, then you’ll be left hanging. Because PDR youtube videos aren’t structured. In order to understand what the tools do and how you can decide to purchase a set of paintless dent repair tools, you’ll have to invest more of your time. In addition, perhaps invest a small amount of money before you buy ANY TYPE of PDR tools. (See top of post for photos)
I’ve been doing PDR tool reviews and PDR training videos for years. Both on youtube, instagram and all social media platforms. I found that youtube viewers aren’t as serious as invested viewers. If you’re serious, you will strongly consider joining a platform called Dent Trainer to help you accelerate not only understanding how pdr tools are used and work, but the PDR technique itself.
Lucky for you I made a video about it so you can make a more intelligent choice and judge for yourself.
#1 TOP PAINTLESS DENT REMOVAL TOOL – SCREW ON SOFT TIP TOOL
By far the screw on tip (soft tip pdr tool) is my first choice. It’s your swiss army knife type of PDR tool. You can switch numerous tips on and off. Start with a screw on soft tip, then a mid point tip and finally a sharper tip. (You’ll see what I mean exactly in full detail if you check out some videos at (Dent Trainer).
This pdr tool is fantastic in almost every open panel. Doors, hood (bonnet), fenders (wing), quarter panels and more, I prefer the 24″ so you can use in just about all situations. You can purchase the screw on tip from here at Ultra Dent Tools
#2 TOP PAINTLESS DENT REMOVAL TOOL – DOOR LORD SET
I use these the DOOR LORDS on a daily for going down the doors and fenders. Strong, thin and sharp enough to finish sharp pits at the end, You’ll use a Door Lord for open access and some limited bracing areas as well. With an adjustable handle, you’ll have the full motion with tons of comfortable positions. Anson PDR does sell the Door Lords individually as well if you are on a tight budget.
#3 TOP PAINTLESS DENT REMOVAL TOOL – WHALE TAILS
if it weren’t for whale tails, we would be making more high spots getting to the dent than actually fixing the dents. A whale tail is ideal for tight areas or between bracing. One side of the edge kicks off the brace (like the impact beam on a door) and the other side of the whale tail twists against the dent.
These thin tools are fantastic for bracing on hoods, doors, roofs and trunks. But be careful, they are sharp and can create more poke marks faster than a needle on a sewing machine. That’s if you aren’t understanding that learning paintless dent removal is about going slow. The slower you learn PDR, the faster you get at PDR.
